Timebanking happens when a group of people agree to exchange skills and resources for time-credits.  Time-credits are a kind of money.

When a person gives one hour of service they receive one time-credit and this is stored in the timebank.

About Timebank Auckland

Timebank Auckland supports local Auckland timebanks to get started.  We provide a platform to store time-credits and help as little or as much as the local timebank would like.

You can join the Auckland-wide network or a local timebank as an individual, a group or an organisation.  There are currently two timebanks in Auckland, one based in Sandringham and one in Māngere.

Benefits of Timebanking

Timebanks are community-led, and run networks that enable people, groups, businesses and organisations to exchange their time, skills and resources. Timebanks have been shown to increase community resilience by creating trusted connections within a community. This happens when people:

  • participate in their community and get a sense of belonging
  • learn about skills they have to offer
  • share and teach skills to others
  • participate in activities and gain confidence through being valued for the skills they currently have
  • exchange skills using time-credits.

Timebanks encourage people to exchange skills within a community where time is the currency. It's amazing what can be done without the use of money!

In a timebank everyone's time is equally valued. So helping a timebank member for one hour will earn you one time-credit.

A timebank is formed when a group of people agree to earn and spend time-credits to meet the needs of friends, neighbours, and the larger community.

Timebanks reflect the interests and goals of those who participate in them.

Timebank Mangere loves to share skills from gardening and composting to holding sewing circles to help mend clothes.

Timebank Mangere is part of a worldwide network. There are 30 in New Zealand and a few thousand around the world.
